About easy dating - a handicap dating service built on dignity

We are one of the dating sites for people with disabilities where your identity, pace, and access needs come first. This is the story of how easy dating began, what we believe, and the guardrails we have built so our community can trust us with something as tender as love.

Why we exist

Why we built this platform

Mainstream dating apps were not designed with disabled people in mind. Most lack screen-reader support, rely on visual photo-first swiping, and treat disability as an afterthought - something to "disclose" into an inbox that usually goes silent. According to a study cited by accessibility.works, 72% of mobile user journeys contain accessibility barriers, and dating apps are among the worst offenders. The swipe gesture is inaccessible for many motor disabilities. CAPTCHAs often have no audio alternative. Profile flows assume one standard body and one standard brain.

The deeper harm, though, is cultural. Disabled adults are routinely told - by apps, by strangers, sometimes by clinicians - that dating "isn't really for them." People grow up hearing that they are asexual by default, or only suited to a caregiver, or incapable of partnership. Many disabled adults start dating years later than their non-disabled peers because of these messages. easy dating exists to push back - gently, persistently - against every one of them.

The gap we are trying to close

Roughly 1.3 billion people worldwide live with some form of disability, and yet the number of dating platforms designed accessibility-first can be counted on two hands. A handicap dating service is not a niche product - it is a missing default.

Our mission

Our mission for inclusive dating

Our mission is simple to say and harder to build: help disabled adults find partners who value their wholeness, not their diagnosis. We believe dating while disabled is not about finding someone who "doesn't mind" your condition. It is about finding someone who sees the resilience, the humor, the depth that come from living in your particular body and mind - and who knows where the emergency meds are kept.

Love may look like takeout on flare days, laughter through uncertainty, and a partner who learns your care routine without being asked. - our guiding sentence, paraphrased from disability writers and members

Every feature decision passes through that sentence. If a proposed tool would speed up matching but raise the emotional cost of disclosure, we do not build it. If a shortcut would grow the user base but weaken verification, we do not take it. The pace here is deliberate, because the relationships we hope to foster are meant to last longer than a swipe.

The voice behind the platform

The voice behind the platform

easy dating was started by a small group who had each been burned by mainstream apps. One of our founders is a wheelchair user and chronic-illness advocate. One is autistic. One is the hearing partner in a Deaf-hearing marriage. The spark was familiar to anyone who has tried to date disabled: a pattern of matches that vanished the moment a mobility aid, a hearing aid, or a diagnosis came into the conversation. We drew our first screens in a notebook, the way Dateability's sisters Jacqueline and Alexa Child famously did after Jacqueline received a feeding tube in 2021 and panicked about her dating prospects.

We are not building a tech product. We are building the living room we wish had existed when we each started dating - with good light, soft chairs, and a door that locks out the people who do not belong.

What we stand on

Values that guide every profile

Three values sit at the center of this platform. They are not taglines - they shape moderation decisions, feature priorities, and the way our team shows up.

Dignity

Every member is a full person, not a diagnosis to work around. We never use pity language, "inspirational" framing, or medicalized euphemisms like "differently abled." You name yourself, on your terms.

Consent

Disclosure is always optional. Your location is hidden until you reveal it. Photos are watermarked against scraping. Every step is opt-in, and every yes can become a no without explanation.

Accessibility

Screen readers, keyboard navigation, captioned video, high-contrast text, and large touch targets are defaults - not add-ons. The platform meets WCAG 2.1 Level AA and we keep testing with real disabled users.

A non-negotiable

Our anti-devotee stance

A "devotee" is a person who fetishizes disability - who pursues disabled partners because of the disability rather than the person. easy dating has zero tolerance for predatory devotee behavior. Accounts that treat disability like an exotic hobby, ask intrusive questions about mobility aids, or push for photos of specific body parts are removed on sight. Our moderation team operates on a better safe than sorry standard, which we learned from platforms like Dateability whose founders are publicly accountable.

Classic red flags our moderators watch for include:

  • Opening messages that focus on the disability rather than the person.
  • Requests for photos of a stump, prosthetic, wheelchair, or feeding tube.
  • Fast declarations of love or demands to move off-platform within days.
  • Framing a disabled partner as a "project," "mission," or reason to feel heroic.

Technical promise

WCAG and our team commitment to access

easy dating is engineered to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the same standard required by the US Department of Justice's April 2024 ADA Title II rule and the European Accessibility Act. That means text alternatives on images, full keyboard navigation, sufficient color contrast, screen-reader-friendly form labels, and no reliance on gestures like swipe to find a match.

We audit the platform every quarter with a mixed panel that includes blind, low-vision, Deaf, autistic, and motor-impaired testers who are paid for their time. When something breaks, we fix it publicly in our release notes. We would rather ship a smaller feature that everyone can use than a flashy one that shuts people out.

What accessibility looks like here

  • Screen-reader tested with NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver
  • Captions on every onboarding and story video
  • 48px minimum touch targets across the interface
  • Light and dark themes with AA-compliant contrast
  • No swipe gestures required to find or message a match
